Plant Care Guide: My plant is here, what now?

Franklin Plant Co.

Shipping live plants always comes with some level of stress. Minor cosmetic damage, slight yellowing, or a soft leaf can be completely normal after transit. Give your plant time to adjust before making major changes. Here’s how to help it settle in properly:

Unboxing

Unpack your plant as soon as possible after delivery. Remove all packaging materials carefully and allow the plant to breathe. Place it in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, drafts, or extreme temperature swings for the first 24–48 hours.

Watering

First, assess the soil. If the substrate is still damp, do not water. Check again in 24 hours. If the soil is dry, give the plant a thorough soak — water deeply until it runs through the drainage holes. After that, allow the soil to dry out appropriately before watering again. We do not recommend watering “light and often.” A full soak followed by a proper dry period is healthier for root development. A simple moisture meter can be helpful, but learning your plant’s visual cues is even better.

Light

Place your plant in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight immediately after shipping, as leaves can burn while stressed. Once acclimated, you can gradually increase light if the plant requires it. Grow lights are perfectly acceptable and often ideal for consistent results.

Humidity

Many tropical plants appreciate moderate humidity (around 60% is ideal), but they can adapt to average indoor conditions over time. If you plan to adjust humidity levels, do so gradually. Sudden environmental shifts create more stress than steady conditions.

Repotting

Do not repot immediately. Allow the plant to acclimate to your space for at least 2–3 weeks before changing its substrate. Repotting too soon can compound shipping stress and slow recovery.

A Final Note

Some yellowing, minor browning, or cosmetic blemishes can be normal after shipping. Plants are living things, not manufactured goods. Patience is key.
